Dr. Helgi Kolk is a geriatrician at Tartu University Hospital, Estonia. She graduated in 1988 from University of Tartu and had postgraduate training in internal medicine at the same university. From 1993 to 2005 she was appointed as internist, researcher and lecturer of the internal and family medicine at Medical Faculty of Tartu University. Her interest to geriatrics commenced in the nineties during doctoral studies at Karolinska Institutet when she could get into Swedish system of the elderly care. Further studies at Central European University (Hungary) and at Case Western Reserve University (US) were supported by Open Society Foundation.

Since 2005 dr. Kolk is working at the department of Traumatology and Orthopaedics at Tartu University Hospital, past 2years she is responsible for the development of orthogeriatric services. Her research interests focus on different fields of geriatrics, especially geriatric assessment, rehabilitation, gut microflora and nutrition. Topic of her doctoral thesis defenced in 2003 was evaluation of upper abdominal symptoms and Helicobacter pylori infection.

Doctor Kolk was initiator and manager of the first training course of geriatricians in Estonia in 2007–2008. She currently teaches medical students at Tartu University (geriatric clinical pharmacology) and also participates in training doctors as well as other health professionals in geriatrics. She represents Estonia on the full board of the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society from 2005 and in the UEMS Geriatric Medicine Section from 2006. Helgi Kolk is board member member of both national organisations, Estonian Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and Estonian Society of Geriatrics.
